General School Info: Walter Bracken Magnet Empowerment School students participate in an elementary curriculum with special emphasis on science, mathematics, and technology. Learning labs focused on earth, life, and physical sciences are used to enrich the curriculum and add hands-on experiences. Children explore and investigate using critical thinking skills. In two computer labs and in every classroom, students have access to modern technology for data collection, analysis, interpretation, and publication. Current technology is thoroughly integrated at Bracken and is an integral part of daily instruction. All classroom teachers have integrated the use of iPads in daily instruction. Career education is a highlight where students are taught about past and future career opportunities. Outdoor gardens, tortoise habitats, and investigative field trips provide additional opportunities for hands-on discovery. All classrooms are planting in a new raised bed garden that includes fruit trees and student grown vegetables and herbs. Parent and community support are abundant and provide our students with an optimal learning environment.

We really like the Woolly Pocket gardens because of their drip system. This is very important for gardening in the desert.

The Woolly Garden will have a direct impact for our school and students by providing a place to grow flowers in our already established vegetable/ fruit garden. The flowers will help attract insects that will help us pollinate the other plants in the garden.  It will also provide for a beautiful area since this is also where our students read outdoors.

We want to be gardening by… ASAP

>
Our gardening plan: Grades Pre K-5th will be learning in the garden. We will be hang the Woolly School Garden on our fence and have 3 locations, so we would love to be able to buy more than one garden. We plan to grow flowers in our Woolly Garden for the purpose of bringing bees to our already existing raised bed vegetable/fruit gardens. The beauty the flowers will bring is an extra bonus.

We have initiated a number of programs as a part of our district Healthy Schools Initiative including salad bars at lunch.  We focus on math and science instruction and the garden is a natural fit in our school.  We have monthly chef demonstrations with healthy recipes using food that we grow. We also sent home recipes & fresh food for our students to share with their parents. Our gardening program is growing this year & we are excited to expand it to the perimeter fence.

We would like to start the Woolly School Garden program our school. Our goal is to have the vertical garden as an additional hands-on outdoor classroom, to give our students the opportunity to grow food for themselves & their families. Using the curriculum lessons provided by Woolly School Gardens & 4-H, students will learn how to grow their own food. This grant will allow us to have fresh healthy food to use in the school kitchen and salad bar & for the kids to take home to their parents.
