General Garden Info: Longwood maintains 12 raised beds, a butterfly/insect garden & a hydroponic garden. We put together a “Student Butterfly & Teaching Garden Project Handbook” for teachers to introduce students to the garden. Sections include: garden purpose/project goals, knowledge gained, environmental issues, recipes/cooking, nutrition, science experiments, creative writing, & a garden calendar. We hope the handbook will win an award at the Master gardener’s conference, it’s a great school garden teaching tool.
Our Gardening Goal: Our goal is to establish a garden that our teachers & students can participate in at different times of the day & year. We want to teach children about plant growth, growing conditions, & friendly & unfriendly insects. Because the Woolly School Garden curriculum meets the national/state standards, our students can learn more in the garden. By teaching gardening methods that can be done anywhere, the program will allow us to show parents how to provide better nutrition for their families.
