Innovative Horizons Charter School at Nan Sanders

Details

General School Info: Innovative Horizons Charter School is a new school that opened August 2011 in Perris.  We have initiated a number of programs to increase awareness of healthy, nutritional food and eating habits. To date, there has not yet been a school garden at Innovative Horizons Charter School. We are eager and excited to start a vertical garden on our school grounds!

Our Gardening Plan: Our goal is to have the Woolly School Garden serve as our hands-on outdoor classroom, to give our students the opportunity to grow food for themselves and their families. This grant would make it possible for us to have fresh healthy food to use with the students on campus. By creating an edible garden we hope to encourage students to eat healthier and enjoy the art of gardening.   Since we have limited space, we want to expand our garden vertically with a Woolly School Garden.

How students will engage with the Woolly School Garden:

The children have engaged with the garden in many ways: the planning process (what to plant!), the build, planting and maintenance. Students will care for & harvest crops and learn about how food is grown. In addition to these tasks, the children will engage with the garden by learning selected subjects in their outdoor classroom. We want our students to learn about what work goes in to the food they eat in order to gain an understanding of what fresh and healthy food means.
