General School Info: Since it's opening in 1975, Hawes has never had an organized school garden. We are eager to start a vertical garden and begin sharing the benefits of student taste tests of farm fresh foods and increasing awareness of healthy food. Our garden representative and volunteers have experience gardening at home and we are reaching out to the Huntington Beach Community Garden, OCCE and the Huntington Garden Center with the hopes they will share their knowledge and expertise with us.
Our Gardening Goal: Our goal is to have the Woolly School Garden serve as our hands-on outdoor classroom, to give our students the opportunity to grow food for themselves and their families. The garden will be in an ideal location for all students to be able to witness daily growth of the vegetables as we plan to place it on the wall next to the lunch area where grades 1-5 eat lunch everyday.
Along with science-related instruction (seed development, plant growth), we want every child to benefit from learning about nutrition and the importance of fresh vegetables in their diet. Children will map and study the garden and observe and record incremental plant growth. Many of the students use the lunch area for break-out sessions throughout the day with teachers and/or parent helpers, giving us the opportunity to incorporate a living classroom into their studies.
