General School Info:

Gompers Middle School is located in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.  It’s student body is 83% Latino and 17% African American.  30% of the student population receives Special Education Services, and 20% of all students are either in foster care or “kinship” care arrangements.  Gompers has traditionally been on the lowest tier of schools with regard to test scores, though last year it saw a 10% increase in its API (academic performance indicators).

.
Tell us about your gardening plan:  The Woolly Pocket Garden will allow 100 sixth grade students to participate in cultivating and harvesting five different types of vegetables.  The experience will teach the students the value of a nutritional diet, as well as the virtues of growing one’s own vegetables.  Childhood obesity is a health issue at Gompers which has begun to receive District-wide recognition.
.
Additionally, we will donate a portion of the harvest to the local Watts Senior Center for the home-bound seniors who have difficulty making the trip to markets with fresh produce.
