Frequently Asked Questions
The Basics
Space is valuable. Vertical gardens don't require you to give up any space. Also, why spend time and money on plowing, digging ditches for irrigation, or testing to make sure the soil isn't contaminated? Garden on an empty fence or wall and have an easy garden without the fuss, and beautify an otherwise bland space.
Everything a school needs to create a beautiful outdoor classroom!

Installation & Maintenance
What sun exposure is best?
Your Woolly School Garden will grow best in 6–10 hours of sunlight per day. If you have fewer than six hours of sun available, then you might consider growing mostly herbs, greens (like lettuces and kales) and partial-shade-loving flowers.
How many people does it take to install a WSG?
We recommend having a couple friends around to help you install the Pockets—it’s simply not as fun alone!
How do I install a WSG on a ______ (chain-link fence, wood or steel fence/wall, masonry wall, dry wall)?
Please see our Installation Page on woollypocket.com to download our manual instructions on how to set-up a WSG on any a wall or fence.
Gardening & Plants
What kind of seeds are included?
A Woolly School Garden comes with organic edible seeds from Peaceful Valley! You will receive seeds for Spring and Fall, including green onion, carrot, arugula, cherry tomato, kale, basil, sweet pea, radish, mesculan greens, chard, beans, beet, sugar snap peas, and marigold.
What type of soil should I use?
Although, soil is not included in our kit, we highly recommend using premium organic soil. A great garden begins with great soil. Contact your local garden retailer for premium organic soil donations to your school garden.
What do I do over summer?
We recommend installing drip irrigation (additional $100) in your Woolly School Garden. If you have a dripline installed with an automatic timer, you can set it, and let it water automatically all throughout summer. It's that easy!
How do I put the soil into the pockets without making a mess?
Lay down some plastic to cover the ground, use an empty pot or small bucket to scoop soil into the pockets once they are hung. If you have someone to help you, one person can hold the soil bag above the pocket and the other can feed the soil into the pocket while spreading it around. Make sure to push the soil into the corners of the pockets to reduce air gaps.
What plants can I plant when we aren’t gardening for edibles?
Plants are plants. If they can grow in a pot, they can grow better in a pocket. If you want florals, mimic what a local nursery uses for their hanging basket ideas.
Watering
Your Woolly School Garden will be happiest if it has easy access to water. Before hanging your Pockets, look around for the nearest water source. The closer water is located to your garden, the easier it will be to remember to water. We recommend installing drip irrigation for an additional $100.
How much water fills the pockets?
As a general rule, 3 cups of water fills one pocket, remember when watering Pockets, to water the Tongue.
How do I install a drip line?
For more information on drip irrigation, check the professional section of woollypocket.com. We can add a Woolly School Garden drip kit for $100.
My pockets are showing hard-water residue, how do I clean that off?
The stains are calcium/mineral build-up caused by overwatering and using un-filtered water. Brush off the residue with a stiff bristle brush, and avoid future residue by using only filtered water for and not overwatering.
How do I properly water pockets?
Drip lines are our favorite method for watering larger installations. Hoses are typically too messy, but you can hand water pockets by using a precision watering tool, such as a garden sprayer or watering cans.
How often should I water my plants?
Every plant is different. Watering amounts and times can vary based on sun exposure of your garden, size of the plant, soil type and plant type. As a general rule, each Pocket will require 3 cups of water every day in a dry climate, less in more humid climates.
